This month we feature fluxmonkey with J-Guy Laughlin performing out-of-this-world analog electronics and drums. Also, discover a Larry Marotta and Ryan Jewell duo, you've never heard drums like these.

The Marotta Hour is an electro-acoustic music series featuring unexpected sounds from free jazz to electronic to free-form improvisation. Come and hear some of the most cutting-edge musicians and composers from Columbus and beyond. Suggested donation $5 to $10.

Fluxmonkey: There are two *Bob Drakes* who build experimental instruments, play banjo, and have a penchant for improvised/avant garde musics. This is the one who used to play in the Whistle Pigs from Zenar and Red Dark Sweet, not the one from Thinking Plague and 5UUs. After completing an 5-year apprenticeship as a violin maker, he's focused on original electroacoustic instruments, installations, and modular synthesis.

J. Guy Laughlin bio: J. Guy Laughlin Jr. is a percussionist/sound artist from Cleveland, active in the city's experimental music community. After amassing and unlearning a collegiate education in jazz, he has pursued an interest in the physical properties of percussion, particularly electro-acoustic possibilities.

My bio: Larry Marotta is a musician, composer, and improviser based in Columbus, Ohio. He has performed original silent movie scores throughout the US. His movie soundtracks have appeared on Turner Classic Movies and on DVDs released by Kino International. As an improviser, he plays guitar around the country as a soloist or with an eclectic mix of musicians.

Ryan Jewell is a Columbus-based-percussionist who travels the world spreading the gospel of his extended percussion techniques. He has brought his unlimited arsenal of sound to such artists as Jandek, C. Spencer Yeh, Greg Kelley, Bhob Rainey, Jack Wright, and countless others.

Sid Chafetz: Speaking Out

Sid Chafetz has used his artwork as a platform to speak out about provocative, even uncomfortable, issues. He is also one of the most interesting people anyone is likely to meet, with deep insights and passionate opinions about politics, literature, history, art, and contemporary life. Join Ann Bremner, co-curator of this exhibition, and Bob Tauber, long-time Chafetz collaborator, for a wide-ranging conversation about their perspectives on Chafetz and his art currently on view. Chafetz will join them to answer questions at the end of conversation.

Ann Bremner was the co-curator of the exhibition Chafetz Graphics: Satire and Homage in 1988 and editor of its accompanying catalogue, a comprehensive chronicle of the artist’s prints to that date. Now publications editor at Ohio State’s Wexner Center for the Arts, she is also co-curator of the Urban Art Space’s current Chafetz exhibition.

Bob Tauber, director of the Book Arts Lab and Logan Elm Press at The Ohio State University Libraries, has collaborated with Chafetz on countless book and broadsheet print projects since the 1970s. One of their recent endeavors is the monumental 7 Poets, a portfolio of seven portraits by Chafetz and text by James Battersby, which launched the reopening of the Logan Elm Press as part of the University Libraries in 2005.
