A Look Back: Poets Against War

For those who were not able to take part in any of poetry that happened back in October as part of the Poets Against War celebration. I have decided to post one of the poems I found particularly interesting for all you faithful readers out there to enjoy. Feel free to comment and start a discussion.

Who Sent Them

The target's head explodes in a pink mist.
The sniper half a mile away
pulls back the bolt, the spent
cartridge tumbles to the ground
hollow like old bone.

Hands in Nevada pull back on a joystick, a thumb
pushes a button, in Iraq
bodies curl like spiders dropped in fire.

Bombs thrust forward just above the ground,
sleek with purpose. No more than bullets
do they remember who sent them.

Citizens who watch explosions on TV
then turn away
do not remember who sent them.

Hear a reading by Michael J. Rosen, author of many books about our canine companions, including a new collection of heartfelt essays, Dogs We Love, by Edward Albee, Ann Beattie, Armistead Maupin, Jane Smiley and 14 other great writers. Bring a picture of your dog, and Michael can do a quick portrait of your companion in a copy of the book with purchase.

Read/Aloud at The OSU Urban Art Space

For the month of August on Wednesdays we are dedicating all of our lunchtime programming to dogs. That’s right D-O-G-S.

This Wednesday, the 6th, we will be
our first ReadAloud Program presented in conjunction with OSU Libraries. Bring your lunch, sit back, and listen to author Charlene Fix read one of Thurber's dog stories and share her own poetic reflections on dogs -- from Elkhound/Keeshond, Collie/Shepherd, Great Pyrennes, to Basset Hounds. Charlene Fix is a professor of English at the Columbus College of Art Design and a member of the House of Toast Poets. She has received poetry fellowships from the Ohio Arts Council and the Greater Columbus Arts Council, and has published poems in various literary magazines, among them The Journal, The Manhattan Review, The Cincinnati Review, Alimentum and Poetry.
